Any serious collector of this genre needs all three of these vital tomes. The first date listed in each entry is the year of the original publication. Also sprinkled into these listings are more recent adult only titles that are not, strictly speaking, Underground Comix, but this seems like the most likely place to list them, so get over it. Article: WHAT ARE UNDERGROUND COMIX, AND WHY ARE THEY ANY DIFFERENT THAN MANY OF THE COMICS LISTED IN THE MISCELLANEOUS SECTION? That's a really good question! And I don't have a really good answer. A simple answer is, "I know it when I see it" but that really does over- simplify the subject. Traditionally, Comix should deal in "adult" subjects such as sex, drugs, and raw humor. Comix were distributed through alternative locations such as head shops, liquor stores, and occasionally a hip record shop, not along side the code-approved comics in the drug stores. When comic shops began popping up all over the country in the 1970's, the lines started blurring. Comics and Comix available at one location! Traditional comic distributors began distributing Comix. The new small comic book companies started publishing books that were underground in spirit, but aboveground in appearance. Were they truly Underground, or were they something else? I don't have the answers, but I DO have the funnybooks! In the section below, I list comics and comix that I'm just not comfortable listing in my Miscellaneous Publishers sections alongside the Archie and Richie Rich comics. Many of the comics listed in those sections could easily fit here. A typical issue of Eightball, or Love & Rockets for example, might contain a stray penis, or a few exposed overly large breasts, but always in good taste. Whereas Naughty Bits, or Dirty Plotte (both great comix!) go a bit too far, are too sexually explicit, and I definitely feel more comfortable with placing those titles here. Conversely, many of the "Under- ground" comix here would not be out of place in my Miscellaneous sections, such as Avenging World, or Cartoon History of the Universe. However, these titles were originally distributed by the Underground distributors and racked alongside Zap and Freak Brothers. Hence their inclusion here. Most comic books from Eros Publishing, or Sexy Fruit, or any of a number of "adults only" publishers aren't really undergrounds to my mind, as they are simply fuck-books without much plot. However, this seems to be the best place to list them. Don't like it? Then don't buy 'em! There are plenty of "Real" Underground Comix here that are sure to please! Enjoy!
